Harrow Council’s Special Educational Needs Services are currently recruiting for a Habilitation Officer to join their expanding team. The post holder will report to the Children’s Sensory Team Manager and will work with children and young people with vision impairment (often with additional/difficulties) aged between 0-25 years, in schools and other settings to promote their independence through working with them in partnership with parents, carers, teaching assistants, school staff, staff in the Children’s Sensory Team as well as other professionals.

The successful post holder will be based at Harrow Civic Centre alongside other teams, who support children and young people with SEN. They will be required to work in indoor and outdoor environments in any school in Harrow, some homes and other settings in Harrow and monitor some Habilitation provision in out-borough schools as directed by the Team Manager/Professional lead.

To be successful in this role you would need to have the below skills & experience:

  • A nationally recognised qualification in Habilitation or be in training to do so for children and young people with visual impairment and Math & English GCSE Grade C
  • Understanding of how to work effectively with children and young people and their parents/guardians to carry out effective Habilitation programmes.
  • Understanding and knowledge of strategies that would successfully support a child or young person to progress safely with their independence
  • Knowledge of working directly with children and young people and their parents/guardians to carry out effective Habilitation programmes, including low vision training.
  • Successful experience of teaching mobility and independence skills to children and young people with a vision impairment in home, school and community settings.
  • Ideally, at least two years successful experience working in schools and the role of Habilitation worker OR if newly qualified, you must be prepared to undertake MISE registration.
