Overview

The Environment and Culture Department at Harrow Council are looking for an Archivist to join their team on a part time basis. The Archivist will be responsible for the management, organisation, conservation, development and accessibility of the local history collection and archive held at Headstone Manor & Museum relating to the history of Harrow and its communities. They will contribute to the development and objectives of Cultural Strategy, specifically relating to archives and local history.

The post holder will manage and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the local history collection and archive to achieve and maintain Archive Service Accreditation.

About you

The successful candidate will have:

  • Degree level education or equivalent, or relevant work experience
  • Experience of working in a public facing archives environment
  • Demonstrable knowledge of best practice and recent developments in archives and record management, including collections care, preservation and storage, as well as outreach, access and partnership working
  • A high level of written and verbal communication skills for dealing with a wide variety of people and working with diverse communities.
  • An understanding of the operations of an archives or public records service including health and safety, remedial and preventative conservation and related collections care systems and procedure.
  • Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of current legislation and standards regarding archives, including the Archive Service Accreditation standard.
  • Experience in undertaking historical research using archive collections, with a clear understanding and knowledge of local history and related resources.
  • The ability to manage and mentor a small team of work placement students and volunteers
